The Slogar
|
During the late 1800’s, Second Street was a major thoroughfare for Crested Butte miners returning from the Big Mine on the Bench. At the corner of Second and Whiterock stood what is known as the Slogar Restaurant today, built in 1882 by Thomas W. Lipcomb.
Back then, the Slogar was one of 18 taverns in town, and the first tavern miners came to as they returned from their long day’s work. An addition was added to the historic Slogar building when it was restored in 1976. The current Victorian motif of the Slogar was selected at the time of its renovation. Antiques and antique replicas were chosen to create the unusual and comfortable Victorian surroundings. The elaborate bar was built by local carpenters, Joe Grabowski and Dave Bennett. Robin Grabowski designed and made the artistic stained glass piece that hangs behind the bar. The Slogar menu has its own historical Our specialty, skillet fried chicken, is from a recipe famous for its great taste since 1915. The unusual sweet and sour cole slaw salad of the Slogar is taken from a Pennsylvania Dutch recipe dating back to the early 1800’s. Baking powder biscuits, old-fashioned mashed potatoes with rich chicken gravy, and homestyle ice cream have always been traditional favorites. The Slogar brings you a heritage of fine foods and friendly family-style service for dining with a delicious difference. Welcome to the Slogar, where we take specialpride in providing you “Dining With A Delicious Difference”.
